Coffee Tour Cafe Don Emilio Costa Rica

Just a 35-45 minute drive from Uvita Centro, and yet a world away in terms of culture and environment, the very popular (and very fun) coffee tour at Cafe Don Emilio is one of the most authentic and educational Costa Rica experiences that you will find in all of Costa Rica. The tour is led by Denier, who is the son of Emilio and has worked in every aspect of coffee production for many years. In this two to three hour coffee tour you will learn all about the process of growing and processing coffee, you will take a short walk around the plantation to inspect the coffee plants, see the coffee bean drying areas and even take part in the separation of the coffee husks through a unique natural process.

Returning inside you will have the chance to witness the roasting process and learn about the way coffee is graded. You soon will understand why this local coffee is so much more tasty and healthier for you than the coffee you get from the stores. There is an option for lunch and it should be noted that Rita is a very good cook. If you are lucky they may even have some banana bread or a well prepared Pineapple for you to sample.

There are tours available at 10am and 2pm every day except Wednesdays and Saturdays when Denier is at El Mercado, The farmers Market in Uvita. You will be able to buy freshly roasted coffee after the tour.A 4x4 is required to make the 35 minute drive to the plantation, if you don't want to drive you can take one of Uvita's sturdy 4x4 Taxis to get you there.

There is also a very beautiful waterfall near the plantation called

San Luis Morete Waterfall(Las Lajas)

many people like to visit before the tour.

Make sure to allow extra time if you plan on exploring the falls.

Denier and the family are very good friends of mine.

Don Emilio and Doña Rita, both farmers who along with their children have been harvesting coffee since the mid-nineties and are committed to providing their customers with quality coffee. Cafe Don Emilio is prepared through a slow and careful artisanal method, when you visit the plantation and share a cup of coffee with them, they will make you feel at home and show you the artisanal culture of coffee from the perspective of an authentic peasant family. Tradition and a landscape adorned by the beautiful view of Bahía Ballena are the perfect setting to live the experience of coffee production as our grandparents taught us at the beginning of the century.
