Dive into one of Costa Rica's most spectacular marine treasures. Known as the "mini-Galapagos" of the Pacific, the Caño Island Biological Reserve offers crystal-clear turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, and world-class snorkeling just a boat ride away from Uvita Costa Rica

Caño Island Snorkeling Tour: Quick Details

  • Price: From $150.00

  • Duration: Full-day (7:00 AM – 2:30 PM)

  • Departure Point: Uvita (Dolphin Tour Offices)

  • Boat Ride: Approx. 1.5 hours (keep your eyes peeled for whales and dolphins!)

  • Highlights: Two guided snorkeling sessions, marine wildlife, and pre-Columbian history.

The Experience: A Day Under the Sea

Your adventure begins at the Marino Ballena area in Uvita. As we head 16km northwest of the Osa Peninsula, the boat ride itself is a safari; depending on the season, you might spot Humpback whales, playful bottlenose dolphins, and sea turtles breaching the surface.

World-Class Snorkeling

Upon arriving at the island, you'll gear up for two immersive snorkeling sessions (40–50 minutes each).

  • Visibility: Caño Island is famous for having the "bluest" and clearest waters in Costa Rica.

  • The Reefs: Explore five distinct coral platforms reaching depths of 15 meters.

  • What You’ll See: Expect to swim alongside massive schools of jacks, colorful reef fish, white-tip reef sharks, and majestic manta rays.

Island Exploration & Relaxation

Between dives, we take a breather on the island's pristine beaches. If conditions allow, enjoy a 15-minute stroll to the island's viewpoint or simply soak in the views of the undisturbed tropical rainforest.

More Than Just Fish: History & Nature

Caño Island isn't just a marine paradise; it's a site of immense archaeological mystery.

  • Ancient History: The island served as a prehistoric cemetery and settlement for pre-Columbian cultures. You can still spot the famous Diquís stone spheres and ceramic remains left by indigenous peoples.

  • Birdwatcher’s Bonus: The lush secondary forest on the island acts as a vital resting place for various species of migratory birds.

Comfort & Logistics

We believe the end of a tour should be as comfortable as the beginning.

  • Refuel: A light snack is provided between snorkeling sessions on the boat or island.

  • Post-Tour Lunch: Instead of a sandy beach lunch, we return to our Uvita facilities. Here, you can rinse off and enjoy a fresh picnic-style lunch in a relaxed, comfortable environment with full access to restroom facilities before heading out for the afternoon.

Important Travel Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: While snorkeling is great year-round, whale season (July–October and January–March) offers the added bonus of seeing Humpbacks on your way to the island.

  • Conservation First: As a Biological Reserve, the number of daily visitors is strictly limited. We recommend booking in advance to secure your spot in this natural paradise.
